The Shifting Role of Organization Development in Business

Organizations have entered a new era characterized by rapid, dramatic and turbulent changes. These changes include globalization, technology, a more diverse workforce, and a need for flexible organizations that can react quickly to the consumer and economic demands.

In response to these changes, Dr. Chris Worley (Co-Author of Management Reset and the textbook Organizational Development and Change) predicted that Organization Development (OD) will be required to be more embedded in organizational culture, technologically enabled, oriented toward innovation and learning, more interdisciplinary, diverse in client organizations and clearer about the values that guide our practice and behavior.

The 2012 STL-ODN conference will highlight a variety of presenters that will be exploring how the topics above will require a shift in the role of organization development in business.

The conference will begin with a facilitated discussion lead by Dr. Ann Beatty with CEOs Donna Martin and Seth Leadbeater who will share how today’s fast changing climate is affecting their businesses. Then in our morning address, Dr. Gary Mangiofico, Associate Dean of Fully Employed and Executive Programs at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business, will present his views on "The Shifting Role of Organization Development in Business".

The final morning session will include Rob Kaiser, Partner at Kaplan Devries and Susan Duff, Director of Leadership Development, Sisters of Mercy Health System who will be sharing their different views in a session titled "Does the Strength Based Approach to Leadership Development Work?"

Following lunch, attendees will have the opportunity to experience one of two concurrent sessions:

  • Dr. Christian D. Boyd (Executive Director, Celtic Hound Ministries) discussing “Trust and Belonging: Practicing OD in Small, Non-Profit Organizations”
  • Toby Elwin, (Enterprise OD Consultant, Leading Health Services Corporation) presenting on the topic "Social Media: Fight, Flight or Friend? "

We will close out the day with a panel discussion titled “How to Cultivate a Culture of Innovation”. Panelists include Dr. Kristofer Fenlason (Manager-Talent Assessment at 3M), Leslee Small (Consultant at Small Strategies) and Dr. Kyle Lundby (Director - Asia Pacific Region at CEB Valtera).

Following the conference join us for a cocktail reception where all attendees will be able to network and discuss the topics from the day with other OD practitioners.
